Mrs. Kathryn Laufman Walsh, 82, died Friday night at the home of her son, Keefer L. Laufman, in Independence, Kansas. Surviving are one son, Keefer, two daughters, Mrs. Robert L. Baird and Mrs. Winfield Taylor of Shreveport, Louisiana. Mrs. Walsh was a sister of the late John W. Lewis, Sr.

The body was brought to Marshall and taken to the Moore Funeral Home, where funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, with Rev. E. N. Wisely officiating. burial was in the Marshall cemetery.

Her nickname was Katie.

Eliza Ann Knox was born on January 21, 1838 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio to Charles G. and Sarah Ann Wilson Knox. It is believed she was their second child (of 10 children), and after her sister, Catharine's death on Feb 23, 1843 at age 6yr 1 lm 6dys, became their eldest surviving child. The family lived in the town of Mt. Sterling, in
Hopewell Township, in Muskingum County. Charles G. Knox was the son of Charles and Elizabeth Griffith Knox, was born in Delaware on January 10, 1813, the fourth of ten children, and moved with his family in 1813 to Muskingum County, Ohio. Sarah Wilson Knox was born on November 2, 1820 to John W. and Elizabeth Shimer Wilson in Ohio, and grew up in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Charles and Sarah were married on November 14, 1836, probably in Muskingum County.
In 1850, when Eliza was about 13 yrs old, Charles and Sarah sold their home and property in Mt. Sterling, and, traveling by wagon, came and settled in Wabash Township in Clark County, IL. They carved a farm out of native forest, had 6 more children, and remained there for the rest of their lives, and where Eliza grew to maturity.
On November 18, 1855, in Clark County, IL, Eliza married Joseph Eldrige Lewis. Joseph was born Sept 23, 1834 on a farm in Edgar County, IL to Jonathan and Celinda Cobb Lewis. The family moved to Clark County, IL in 1835 when Joseph was less than two years old.
Eliza and Joseph remained in Clark County for the rest of their lives. For many years, Joseph engaged in farming and raising stock, and later, expanding into the merchantile business at McKeen and investing in real estate in Clark County. During the Civil War, he was a member of the First Missouri Cavalry. By 1910, the family was living in Marshall, Clark County, IL.
Eliza died on November 7, 1924 in Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She had been living there with her daughter, Catherine (Kathryn) Lewis Laufman Walsh since 1917. She was 86yr 9m 14dys of age at her death which was due to left hemiplegic (stroke). Joseph preceeded her in death. He died July 27, 1914 in Marshall, Clark County, IL. He was 79yr 10m 4dys of age at his death which was due to apoplexy (stroke). He was attended in his illness by Eliza's cousin, Dr. Robert Bradley. Eliza and Joseph are buried together in the Marshall Township Cemetery in Marshall, Clark County, IL, along with (1) their daughter, Catherine (Kathryn) and her first husband, Jacob H. Laufman, and (2) their son, John W. Lewis, wife Mayme and their son, two daughters, and spouses.

Joseph and Eliza had five children of whom three survived to adulthood. The children are:
1. William Emmet Lewis - born January 21, 1857 in Wabash Township, Clark County, IL. Usually referred to as "Emmet" by the family. Never married. Died August 9, 1896 in the asylum at Anna, Union County, IL at age 39. Cause of death was "Exh [Exhaustion ?] of chronic mania with heart failure. Per a newspaper item, he was sent to the asylum" some years ago", and was buried at Livingston Cemetery in Clark County, IL. No other obituary could be found. It is assumed he is buried with his sister, Rosa and Anna, but there is no record of his burial in the cemetery records compiled by the Clark County Genealogical Society.
2. Rosa B. Lewis - born October 6, 1858 in Wabash Township, Clark County, IL. Name on her tombstone is "Rosabele". Died March 6, 1862 in Wabash Township, Clark County, IL at age 3yr 4mo. Buried with her sister Annie in Livingston Cemetery, Clark County, IL. There is no death record on file nor an obituary found.
3. John Wilson Lewis - born January 25, 1860 on his father's farm in Wabash Township, Clark County, IL. Married Mayme Melinda Casteel on January 20, 1884 in Clark County, IL. John died August 20, 1945 at his home in Marshall, Clark County, IL. Mayme was born in February 7, 1865 in Clark County, IL to Salathial and Ann Lockhard Casteel. She died December 28, 1944 at her home in Marshall, Clark County, IL. Both are buried in Marshall Township Cemetery, Marshall, Clark County, IL along with two of their daughters (Mabel and Marjorie), their son (John W. Lewis, Jr), and their spouses.
4. Annie Eliza Lewis - born December 4, 1861 in Wabash Township, Clark County, IL. Died February 12, 1872 in Wabash Township, Clark County, IL at age 10yr 2m 8dys. Buried with her sister Rosa in Livingston Cemetery, Clark County, IL. There is no death record on file nor an obituary found.
5. Sarah Catherine (Kathryn) Lewis - born February 16, 1864 in Wabash Township, Clark County, IL. Married Jacob H. Laufman May 20, 1883 in Clark County, IL, and he died February 11,1914 at home in Marshall, Clark County, IL. They had five children of whom three, Pearl, Maud, and Keefer, survived infancy. Kathryn married William Walsh on Sept 3, 1917 in Clark County, IL. Kathryn died June 7, 1946, in Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas. Kathryn and Jacob are buried with her parents in Marshall Township Cemetery, Marshall, Clark County, IL. William died April 1, 1934 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, and is buried in Cavalry Cemetery in Terre Haute, Vigo County, IN.
