"Hallie never married; Susie, (her sister), was widowed at a young age & no children. They lived together for 50 years or more; they were my Arsenic & Old Lace aunties." "The family moved to Terre Haute from Marshall about 1905 or 06 after Hallie became very ill and had to be hospitalized at Union Hospital in Terre Haute for a long period. She had developed an infection in her leg bone after a fall while ice skating without permission. She didn't tell for some time that she'd fallen and that she'd been in pain. The leg ceased to grow, leaving her with one normal leg and one leg about 10" shorter. They thought she'd never walk again but she did, with crutches 1st and then a cane and extension to her leg. Hallie was a talented seamstress, sewed for self and others, and taught sewing skills for the WPA during the Depression." Susan Forsythe Johnson; email; 3/12/2007 |
